“Wheat Pattern” plates at Rosario, Argentina (1880-1960) in the socioeconomic evolution of the city

The introduction of imported merchandise from the mid-nineteenth century in Argentina, and particularly in Rosario, implied a great variety of products in the local market. To meet everyday needs, tableware was introduced in large numbers and in multiple types, styles, and techniques, sometimes for just three household uses: serving, eating, and drinking. The competitiveness between European factories and the social evolution of the country was reflected in cheap dishes massively available in the bazaars and the earthenware tableware with molded shapes was a considerable success, in particular the so-called Wheat Pattern. Through the analysis of archaeological material, documentation and social memory, the objective of this work is to describe this tableware, recovered from Rosario garbage dumps and interpret its socioeconomic importance, even knowing that the knowledge about these objects is still obscure and imprecise, perhaps for its original "insignificance" in everyday life in Rosario.
