Abstract

Through the research project UBACyT (2002013010049BA) we intend to get to know about the settlement process of the northern zone of La Pampa province. We present the results of the analysis of a set of metal tubes found on the site Mariano Miró (early XX century, Chapaleufú, La Pampa, Argentina). Between the years 1901-1914 existed in this locality a town of pioneer colonists of the settlement process of the northern zone of this province. They were mostly immigrants from Spain and Italy who brought forth the rural development. Finding these metal tubes on the site turns remarkable because they were interpreted as metal straws to drink mate, our ‘traditional’ beverage. In a dynamic scene, constantly changing post-border rural areas the native customs are mixed with european consumption practices, as evidenced by these metal straws, found in a disposal area during archaeological excavations in 2014. We propose to problematize the phenomenon of the migrant identity construction process in relation to the inclusion of these new groups to the rural setting of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in northern La Pampa, Argentina.
